The inaugural Andrew Barrett Cup kicked off in Sydney with a match between the Black Bilbies and the Red Roos (both teams made up of players from the Sydney Redbacks Club).
The very close game finished in a nail biting finish when Alex from the Red Roos scored with seconds to spare allowing the Red Roos to tip the scales in their favour with a win of 9-8.
Next matches will be held up in Newcastle on Sunday 28th April.
The 2019 version of the Summer Classic proved to be the best yet for Sydney, with many highlights and an incredible run to the final. From the very first whistle, Sydney raced into a 4-0 half time lead against NSW rivals Newcastle, holding on for a solid 7-2 win in the opening match. It was a very impressive performance in the Redbacks first match of the year, and also being Matt’s debut.

The Redbacks rocked up to Adelaide full of optimism after NSW championship win over Newcastle, and a squad of 13 strong. Redbacks debuts for Paula and Valerie as well as a first taste of nationals for Tomas, Sam, Adam and Tania gave the Redbacks a fresh look. With only the top 2 from the round robin of 7 teams making it to the final, every game was crucial, and Sydney had Arista first up.

With only one team entered in the B Grade competition this year, the Redbacks descended on Adelaide with high hopes of picking up the trophy. After a great learning experience in the Summer Classic in February and positive signs in training in the lead-up, the team was feeling good. First nationals experiences for the majority of the team along with competitive debuts for both Victoria and Laurie meant the team had a good balance of experience and enthusiasm. Saturday 15th March saw NSW’s biggest match of the century: Team Sydney vs Team Edinburgh. With 6 Edinburgh ‘old boys’ in town the gauntlet was laid and Team Sydney were challenged.
With a mixed squad of experience, inexperience and complete beginners, the Redbacks put in some great performances in the B grade competition of the Australian National Championships. The improvement, both individually and as a team, from the first match to the last was astonishing and the future looks bright for Korfball in Sydney.
