What is Korfball?

Korfball has landed in Sydney

But what is korfball?

Invented by a Dutch PE teacher in 1902, ‘korf’ ball literally translated means ‘basket’ ball and as such, the sport bears similarities to both netball and basketball. The major difference is that to play korfball, an even number of male and female players are required and it is recognised as the only truly mixed-sex sport in the world. Each team consists of 4 girls and 4 guys in which every player must play every position as defence and attack are switched each time 2 goals are scored.

The facts:

  • Team sport
  • Fast paced
  • Mixed-sex teams
  • 4 girls per team
  • 4 guys per team
  • Attack and defend
  • Similar to netball and basketball

  1. Hi.

I used to play years ago in the Uk from age 12 to 35. Some of my friends are still playing back home but I’m a veteran now. Still fit and active. Do you have an older team in the club and in need of new people.

    Thanks

    Jane

  2. Hi Jane!
Only 9 months late in responding to this….apologies! New year means a new committee and a new start to the season! Would be great if you were still keen on playing – we have a huge range of players, both in terms of ability (we range from beginners through to international reps) and age. Our first training session of the year will be held on Monday 4th Feb at NCIE in redfern from 6pm-7pm, hopefully see you there! If you have any queries, please feel free to message us at sydneykorfball@gmail.com.
    Cheers,
    SCRKC
